"Star Wars“ cold War edition. This book was hard for me to put down. Clancy does, in fact, spin a good yarn. He writes believable, of not downright likeable, characters, and weaves one hell of a web of politics, deceit, treason, loyalties, spying and action. And, it has a little bit of everything that all of Clancy's fans have grown to know and love, right down to taking three pages to describe the trajectory of a missile. This was a phenomenal book, really.Product details

The Cardinal of the Kremlin (Audible Audio Edition) Tom Clancy Michael Prichard Random House Audio Books Reviews
There were many things in this novel that led you to understand complexity of human minds. A patriotic hero turned against his own beloved country. The story took place during the cold war which was almost 40 years ago. New readers may not appreciate the story lines and dated methods of spying games and technologies. I was born during the on set of the war, I liked it.
After reading the edition of HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, I thought I'd read the follow-up (which I had purchased ages ago in paperback, but never read). I imagine, however, that no one proofed the book before it got posted as a edition, as the formatting is lousy.
Many editions suffer from the occasional dropped quotation mark, or awkward joining of paragraphs, but this release has the double-carriage-return problem each and every paragraph has two to three spaces between it. Not the occasional paragraph -- but
every
single
one.
Now, that may not seem like a big deal, but try this test don't think about zebras. (Now, what are you thinking about?)
It's distracting to the point that you notice the book rather than lose yourself in it. I borrowed a hardcopy from a friend and have been reading (and thoroughly enjoying) CARDINAL. But I sure wish I could get my money back on the edition (there is a 7 day return window for -bought books, but it isn't as easy as a regular return).
So, in summary; it's a great book and well worth your time. But be sure to download a sample first if you're interested in the edition to see if they've bothered to fix the formatting problem.
This is a gripping story about high-level intelligence during the Soviet era, approximately during Reagan's Star Wars upgrade of the US military. It is well-crafted thriller/military/spy story fiction. Character development is superb. It is a page-turner, but it is a lengthy book so it can't be read in one sitting. It is Clancy at his best.
The Cardinal of the Kremlin is by far one of my favorite Clancy novels. In The Hunt for Red October you hear rumors of an agent in Russia code named Cardinal. Clancy saw that fans reacted positively to the suspense writing a classic that conjured a meeting by the CIA asking Clancy who is source was. One of his best fans wont be disappointed.
I have read most of Tom Clancy's novels published before 2000 and this is definitely one of the best. This is probably the beginning of his turn from looking at human-scale, personal stories to global-scale, high-level political commentary. I preferred his books when they were about Jack Ryan and the people he interacted with, rather than sweeping epics about the upheavals of whole nations. The Cardinal of the Kremlin focuses on espionage, missile defense, guerilla war, and grand political machinations, but it still manages to feel small and personal. Colonel Filitov, the Archer, Major Gregory, the Foleys, Colonel Vatutin, and a sizable cast of other characters join Jack Ryan in an ensemble that is probably Clancy's best balancing act before his novels became too ambitious. Each character is still unique, still well-developed, still being motivated in ways that are understandable and relatable. Highly recommended. As President Reagan said of The Hunt for Red October, it's a pretty good yarn.
A classic among classics from Clancy! Like "The Hunt For Red October," it perfectly captures the zeitgeist of the 80s cold war from the politics in D.C. and Moscow to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan to the covert operations that tie them all together. The Cardinal of the Kremlin continues the Jack Ryan universe and introduces characters that you will see again later in this chronology. The characters are as vibrant and alive as the world in which they live. As is (was) Clancy's forte, the characters, the world, and the technical elements do not get in each other's way while telling an intense action-packed story. Watch events unfold as CIA's most deeply planted agent in the Kremlin (code-named "Cardinal") gets more and more dangerously close to being exposed before he can provide the United States with data crucial to Soviet-US arms negotiations.
This well crafted story gives its readers some insight into international spying, case officers, and techniques most readers wold no nothing about. This book details how the Soviet Union & the US are trying to build DEFENSIVE weapons, and the lengths the go to innovate and protect them. Jack Ryan is moving up in the agency and is now on the 7th floor of the CIA. THIS IS A GREAT READ!
