Book 1 in the Offbeat Crimes series

Kyle Monroe, his irritating new partner and their fellow freaks at the 77th Precinct must learn to work together to stop a vicious murderer that might not even be human.

Kyle Monroe’s encounter with a strange, gelatinous creature in an alley leaves him scarred and forever changed, revealing odd abilities he wishes he didn’t have and earning him reassignment to a precinct where all the cops have defective paranormal abilities.

Just as he’s starting to adjust to his fellow misfit squad mates, Kyle’s new partner arrives. Tall, physically perfect, reserved and claiming he has no broken psychic talents, Vikash Soren irritates Kyle in every way. But as much as he’d like to hate Vikash, Kyle finds himself oddly drawn to him, their non-abilities meshing in unexpected ways. If they can learn to work together, they might be able to stop the mysterious killer who has been leaving mutilated bodies along the banks of the Schuylkill.

About Angel Martinez

The unlikely black sheep of an ivory tower intellectual family, Angel Martinez has managed to make her way through life reasonably unscathed. Despite a wildly misspent youth, she snagged a degree in English Lit, married once and did it right the first time, (same husband for almost twenty-four years) gave birth to one amazing son, (now in college) and realized at some point that she could get paid for writing.

Published since 2006, Angel's cynical heart cloaks a desperate romantic. You'll find drama and humor given equal weight in her writing and don't expect sad endings. Life is sad enough.

She currently lives in Delaware in a drinking town with a college problem and writes Science Fiction and Fantasy centered around gay heroes.

Kyle is a policeman in a most unusual precinct. His squad is made up of men and women with paranormal capabilities, although they're not exactly X-men. Everyone's powers are a little ‘off’. There's a firestarter who can't spark if it's wet, and a vampire who gets sick on whole blood, just to name a few. Then we have Kyle's new partner Vakesh, who seems unflappable, but it turns out you don't want to make him angry.

This book, the first in a new series by the same author who gave us the Brimstone books, offers up a similar not-too-serious story, with a little romance mixed in. The humor isn't quite as tongue in cheek in this story. It's a little more dry than snarky, although like Brimstone, the characters are all misfits, of a sort.

Other than their paranormal abilities, Kyle and Vakesh come across as quite realistic characters. Both clearly have a past that got them to where they are as the story starts. We get a few glimpses of their pasts as the plot unfolds. It all comes out very naturally in the course of the two men getting to know each other. However, the author is clearly keeping a little in reserve for future installments of the series, the next of which is due out soon.

One would hope that future installments will not only give us more about Kyle and Vakesh, but also add some depth to the other characters on their squad. They certainly sound like an interesting bunch, but in this first short introduction they're little more than caricatures.

Lime Gelatin and Other Monsters Offbeat Crimes Book 1 edition by Angel Martinez Romance eBooks Reviews

Constant rolling snark and trolls. Easy to read narration. What a lot of people try to do with character interaction this accomplishes - things aren't always spelled out, there's no gross melodrama (oh no, I'm gay! How can I function in a society of straights?)

Characters who were the main characters felt introduced too quickly and it was a little overwhelming. But after introductions were over I knew them so well and loved them all.

My least favorite part was the pop culture references (since I'm not big in any of the things that got mentioned) and it felt pretty othering. I understand that the author wants to firmly establish the 2010s as the era which this book took place, but it's a little startling. (this makes more sense when you consider the next book in the series is called the "Pill Bugs of Time")

My other nitpick was that it was too short!! I mean there are other books so the ride continues, but I just wanted it to keep going and going!
Lime Gelatin, what comes to mind? Wobbly, colorful, you poke it and it bounces back. It's not crunchy but smooth and has an intense flavor. Add in a shot a humor and of course other monsters and we have a story to tell. Lime gelatin changed Kyle and he's still figuring out how to deal with it. Well, deal with it, be the awesome detective he trained to be, and figure out his new partner, Mr. Perfect.

I loved these characters. Vikash has the model build, police uniform displayed just so, his voice is the right tone, just everything comes across as perfect. Of yes. . . And he cooks like a dream. As Kyle knows this could lead to a bit of jealousy and hate. Instead we get an unwinding of just who Vikash is and his silences. Because perfect people must process slowly .. . *grin*. But really, no one is ever perfect, oh no. And may I just say the blundering awkwardness was completely charming?

There is a crime to solve, a partner to break in, humor, and so much fun. This is a relaxing well written and entertaining read and I can recommend it. The sequel is on pre order. . . . - Dan's Wife
It IS a step back to read book 1 after reading the not-as-short books 3-5. The precinct is not yet as cohesive and caring a group, the climax being what's apparently their first real op as as unit (though there are some stable partnerships already, and their supportive if stern boss).
It was interesting to see the leather jacket's initial contacts with law enforcement, bad and good. Vikash calls "him" Mr. Jacket; no-one's yet familiar enough to say LJ.
I like both Vikash and Kyle, with their human vulnerabilities and their unabashed geekiness — I'd love to see Vikash's tattoo! The trait of being slow to speak, only after serious reflection, is unusual in a romantic lead, and determinedly serene and responsible Kash is worth waiting for.
I don't like to pay about 3¢/page (that's generally my limit, and this story ends at 93%), but I think I will go ahead and see the firm foundation of Kyle and Kash's relationship along with the next case, in book 2.
I just put the next five books of this series into my “to buy” queue because Kyle and Vikash are just that good together. The next books follow the other members of the 77th Precinct, in charge of paranormal crime, and we get to meet the whole gang in this first story. And what a gang they are! A vampire who needs skim blood, a teleporter who can only hurl fruit, a wolf cursed to be a human sortof, whose partner has a tail and a temper, and more. I can hardly wait!

Our current adventure has talent-sucker-upper Kyle getting to know the almost too perfect Vikash, who does have a good reason for joining the paranormal squad. The dynamic is one that I love, an offbeat POV partner with attitude and an almost too perfect partner with hidden demons and hidden depths. Honest, if Kyle and Vikash teamed up with Eden Winters’ Bo and Lucky, the entire country would have a hailstorm of burnt Percocets. And I would so love to read that story!

Of course, since cop standard is to not be known as gay and not get together with ones partner, these guys have a lot against them right off, and Kyle stays off balance. He doesn’t know what to do with these feelings, and he also doesn’t know what to do about the mysterious monster who’s killing people walking by the river.

The lime gelatin monster of the title is more important backstory than current adventure, and it’s not for the squeamish. In contrast, the sex scenes are more feels than thrusting. That’s not the usual balance, but it works. We get to follow the story through Kyle’s eyes only, and feel his insecurities and his joys.

On to more adventures for the 77th Precinct!
